Flash Tattoos
What Is a Flash Tattoo?
A flash tattoo is a pre-drawn design — typically created by the artist in advance and offered as a ready-to-book piece. Historically, flash designs were displayed on studio walls or in binders and clients chose from what was available. In recent years flash has grown significantly as a category: artists now release limited flash sets online, collectors specifically seek out particular artists' flash, and flash events have become a regular fixture in the regional tattoo scene.
Flash designs are available to tattoo immediately or near-immediately — they require no custom design work, which typically means shorter lead times and lower prices. Many artists use flash as a way to explore design directions they enjoy, which means the quality within the specific style the artist is producing can be very high.
Custom Tattoos
What Is a Custom Tattoo?
A custom tattoo is built entirely around you — your concept, your reference material, your placement, and your preferred style. The artist produces an original design specifically for your project, adapted during the stencil stage for your specific body placement. No one else will have the same tattoo.
Custom work typically requires a consultation before design begins and a longer lead time between consultation and session date. The result is a piece that is uniquely yours — designed for your body, your aesthetic, and your story.
Key Differences
Flash vs Custom — How They Compare
The core difference is origin: flash is pre-made, custom is created for you. Beyond that: flash typically has a shorter lead time and lower price point; custom requires more artist time upfront and costs more as a result. Flash designs may be tattooed on multiple people (though some artists retire flash after a set number of uses); custom work is unique to the client.
Neither is inherently better — the right choice depends on what you want. If you fall in love with a piece of an artist's flash, booking it is a straightforward, high-quality option. If you have a specific concept that requires original design — a portrait, a meaningful symbol, a personalised composition — custom work is the appropriate route.
At Tattoo Things Studio, we offer both. Our artists release flash designs periodically — check our Instagram for current availability. All other commissions are fully custom. Consultations for custom work are always free.
Which to Choose
How to Decide Between Flash and Custom
Choose flash if: you have seen a specific piece you love as-is, you want a shorter booking lead time, you are working with a tighter budget, or you are newer to tattooing and want to try a smaller piece before committing to larger custom work.
Choose custom if: you have a specific concept that requires original design — a personalised subject, a realistic portrait, a meaningful composition, or a sleeve project that needs to be designed as a cohesive piece across multiple sessions. Custom requires more time and investment, but the result is something that could not exist without you.
At Our Studio
How We Work at Tattoo Things Studio
The majority of our work is custom — our artists specialise in bespoke commissions built around client briefs. We do release flash periodically and accept walk-in flash appointments when schedules allow. All custom work begins with a free consultation where we review your reference material, discuss the design direction, and provide a clear quote before any commitment is required.
FAQ
Flash and Custom Tattoos — Common Questions
Are flash tattoos lower quality than custom tattoos?
Not at all. Flash designs are typically work an artist genuinely wants to produce — many flash sets represent some of the most confident, high-quality work an artist publishes. Quality is a function of the artist and execution, not whether the design was pre-drawn or custom-made.
Can I modify a flash design?
Minor placement adjustments are usually possible. Significant modifications to the design itself generally are not — at that point the piece becomes a custom project. If you love a flash design but want substantial changes, the better route is to discuss a custom piece inspired by that design.
Do flash tattoos cost less than custom tattoos?
Generally yes — flash designs require no custom design time, reducing the overall artist time commitment. That said, a large complex flash piece from a senior artist will cost more than a small simple custom piece. Price is ultimately determined by the time and skill required to execute the tattoo.
Will anyone else have the same tattoo if I book flash?
Potentially yes — flash is by definition available to more than one client unless the artist explicitly retires the design after a set number. Some artists do limit flash to a single use or small edition. Ask the artist when you book if exclusivity matters to you.
