Choosing Your First Tattoo

Your first tattoo is a permanent decision — take the time to choose something you will still be proud of in ten, twenty, or forty years. Avoid choosing designs purely because they are trending. Trends fade; good tattoos do not. Instead, focus on subject matter that has personal meaning, or a style of artwork that genuinely appeals to you regardless of what is currently popular.

Think carefully about placement. Visible areas such as hands, neck, and face are significant social statements and may limit your professional options. For a first tattoo, many artists recommend starting with an area that can be covered when needed — the upper arm, back, or thigh are all popular starting points that also tend to heal more reliably.

Choosing the Right Artist in Johor Bahru

Not all tattoo artists are the same — each has a style, a speciality, and a skill level. Choosing the right artist for your design is as important as the design itself. Research each artist by reviewing their portfolio carefully. If you want a realistic portrait, book a realism artist. If you want Japanese traditional, book someone who actually specialises in it. At Tattoo Things Studio, each of our four artists has a clearly defined speciality.

Once you have identified a suitable artist, book a consultation before committing. A good artist will discuss your concept, advise on placement, give honest feedback if something will not work as imagined, and explain the process clearly. All consultations at our studio are free with no commitment required.

How to Prepare for Your First Tattoo Session

Preparation makes a real difference to how your session goes. The day before, moisturise the area to be tattooed — healthy, hydrated skin takes ink more smoothly and heals faster. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment as it thins the blood and can cause excessive bleeding, which dilutes ink and affects the final result. Eat a full meal 1–2 hours before you arrive — tattooing on an empty stomach increases the risk of feeling faint.

Wear loose clothing that provides easy access to the area being tattooed. If you are getting a back or chest piece, a button-up shirt is ideal. Bring water and a light snack for longer sessions. Most importantly — arrive rested. Tired, stressed skin is harder to work with and your experience will be significantly more uncomfortable.

What Happens at Your First Tattoo Session

When you arrive, your artist will clean and prepare the area, apply a stencil of the design for your approval, and make any final adjustments to placement. This is your last opportunity to change position or sizing before the needle touches skin — speak up if anything feels off. Once you confirm, the artist begins outlining, then shading or colouring depending on the design.

During the session, stay as still as possible. Breathing slowly and steadily helps manage the sensation. If you need a break, just ask — artists understand this is a new experience and there is no pressure to push through discomfort unnecessarily. The artist will apply antibacterial wrap after completing the tattoo and give you verbal and written aftercare instructions.

Does Getting a Tattoo Hurt? How Long Will It Take?

Tattooing involves inserting ink below the skin surface using rapid needle movement — it is uncomfortable but manageable for most people. Common descriptions include a scratch, a sunburn, or a vibrating pressure. Intensity varies significantly by placement: the outer arm, thigh, and shoulder are relatively tolerable; the ribs, spine, and inner arm are among the most intense areas. Duration depends on the complexity of the design — a simple small piece may complete in under an hour, while large pieces often span multiple sessions of 3–6 hours each.

First Tattoo Aftercare — The Essentials

How you care for your tattoo in the first 2–4 weeks directly impacts the final result. Keep the tattoo clean, moisturised, and protected from the sun. Do not scratch or pick at peeling skin — this is a natural part of healing and removing skin prematurely causes pale patches. Avoid swimming pools, the sea, and saunas for at least 3–4 weeks. In Malaysia's tropical humidity, pay extra attention to keeping the area clean and dry — sweat accumulation can irritate a healing tattoo. Full aftercare instructions are on our dedicated aftercare page.

Common Questions

First Tattoo — Your Questions Answered

How old do I need to be to get a tattoo in Malaysia?

You must be 18 years old to receive a tattoo at Tattoo Things Studio. We require ID verification if there is any uncertainty about a client's age.

Can I bring a reference image for my first tattoo?

Absolutely — reference images are one of the most helpful things you can bring to a consultation. They communicate style, mood, and detail far more clearly than a verbal description alone. Your artist will adapt the reference to suit your placement, skin tone, and their own artistic style to produce a unique result.

How long do I need to wait to get a second tattoo?

We recommend waiting until your first tattoo is fully healed before starting a second — at least 4–6 weeks for the surface, and ideally 2–3 months if the pieces will be adjacent. Attempting to tattoo skin that is still healing significantly compromises the result on both pieces.

What if I want to change my design after booking?

Minor adjustments are normal and expected up to your appointment date. Significant design changes should be raised as early as possible so your artist has time to rework the concept. Last-minute major redesigns may require rescheduling — your deposit will be transferred to the new appointment.
